Capitolo 24

chapter 24

The African coast

O'Donnell, who had kept his eyes fixed on the skittles for some time, wasn't wrong. The trade winds had suddenly turned and turned south. Did the proximity of the mountain ranges in the interior of Senegal, which ran parallel to the coast, compel this current, having reached this point, to follow a course parallel to the beaches, or did another, coming from the north and faster and more powerful than this, interrupt that one ? Whatever the case, the fact is that the Washington was once again turned away from those shores just as she was about to reach them.
"Let's climb!" said the engineer in a trembling voice. "Perhaps further up we can find the current that drove us to Osen."
"Shall we drop ballast?"

“Tutta, O’Donnell.
"All, O'Donnell. If we let this opportunity pass us by, we are doomed."
"Then away with the ballast! After that, what God wants should happen."
It was perhaps rather unwise to get rid of this weight that she might later lift, but everything had to be tried not to lose the shores that are now disappearing like a mirage in the deserts of Africa. O'Donnell and the boy grabbed the sacks and threw them into the ocean.

The Washington, relieved of those two hundred and ninety kilograms, climbed at breathtaking speed. The balloonists were almost short of breath on this dizzying ascent, while around them the temperature suddenly dropped, cooling, as if a cold winter had descended on these sunny regions. The balloonists, who had suddenly been catapulted into these higher spheres, where the so-called mountain sickness prevailed, fell to the bottom of the gondola, seized with a general feeling of dizziness and the onset of shortness of breath.

They felt nauseous and dizzy, their faces bloated, their bellies distended and their pulses feverish as if they would burst, while an intense cold made them stiff.
"Mister Kelly, where are we?" O'Donnell asked weakly. "Have we been drifted between the ice sheets of Hudson Bay?"

"We are at 5100 meters altitude, in an area where the oxygen tension is decreasing and our blood is no longer penetrating sufficiently."
"I'm dizzy and sick."
"So do I," said the boy. "You might think I suffer from seasickness."
"Our discomfort will soon end because the Washington will soon sink into regions where breathing is easier again."
"Are we at least drifting east, Mister Kelly?" asked the Irishman, making an effort to get up.

“No!” rispose l'ingegnere coi denti stretti. “Siamo immobili.”
“Non c’è corrente ?”
“Nessuna.”
“Ne troveremo più sotto?”
“Lo sapremo più tardi.”
“Oh! che spettacolo! L'Africa è a due passi!…E quel fiume?”
"No!" the engineer replied through clenched teeth. "We're not moving at all."
"There is no current?"
"Not a single."
"Will we find one further down?"
"We'll find out later."
"Oh! What a spectacle! Africa just two steps away... And that river?"
"This is the Gambia."
"One might mistake it for a silver ribbon spread on a green carpet."
"Yes, a band 1500 kilometers long and at the mouth 24."

“Scendiamo.”
“Ancora!... Decisamente il nostro pallone è diventato tisico.”
“Scherzate di fronte a una simile prospettiva?”
"What a panorama, Mister Kelly! To be able to enjoy such a spectacle, you have to put up with a bit of nausea."
"Provided that this spectacle doesn't turn into another, terrible spectacle for us."
"Why?"
"We sink."
"Still! ...Definitely, our balloon has become consumptive."
"You joke in the presence of such a scenario?"

"I hope to be in a good mood until the last moment. I think that a bad mood doesn't change our situation."
"I admire you, O'Donnell."
"Thank you, Mister Kelly."
"For what?"
"For prolonging my life to this day."
"But maybe I'll soon tear her down with me."
"Bah! We have the gondola."
"That's right. And now that I think about it, I intend to use it."

“Per toccare la costa?”
“L’avete detto.”
“Aspettiamo, dunque!”
"To reach the shore?"
"You say it."
"That's an excellent idea that hasn't occurred to me until now. How far away are we from The Gambia?"
"Maybe forty miles."
"Yes, my friend. If we can't find any currents further down to push us ashore, then we will open the valves and fall into the ocean."
"So let's wait!"

"The Washington was slowly descending. The gas was escaping through the fabric and through the tears. The outer portions of the cones were already collapsing and forming folds. The coast of Africa was only forty miles away and was now clearly visible. The Gambia, this great artery, which crosses the lower (the upper part is Senegal) of the region called Senegal-Gambia, appeared as a huge line.

One saw its tributaries to the right and left through the thickets of the forests. With the help of the telescope one saw in the distance the waterfalls of Barrac
onda, which was 400 kilometers from the river mouth and the island of elephants, rhinos, birds and saffo.

At five o'clock there was a deafening crash and several shots rang in the ears of the balloonists. They leaned over the side of the gondola and saw that they were over Bathurst, the main city on the island of Santa Maria. You could see the houses, the school, the living quarters of the black people and the French and English factories. Many black dots populated the streets, running now to one side and now to the other, and lightning flashing here and there.

"The population invites us to come down," said the engineer.
"Let's go down, Mister Kelly."
"I see big black dots behind the village and they are ships."
"And what does that matter"
"It urges me to save her, O'Donnell. There may be an English pontoon ship or a cruiser among those ships and she won't let you escape."

"Are you saying you know who we are?"
"Our voyage must have caused a stir in Europe as well. Your escape will have been made known to all the consulates on the European and African coasts, and the warships will in turn have been informed by them."
"Do you believe?"

"I know how stubborn the English are, my friend. I am sure that if the balloon comes down in one of their territories or near one of their ships, I am sure orders have been made to catch you. England, you should know, will not forgive the Fenians."
"That's true, Mister Kelly, but I don't want you to be shipwrecked in the middle of the Atlantic because of me."

“E spira in favore” disse l’ingegnere.
"I'll try to control myself and land away from these shores, but not so far that I can't get there."
At that moment, the ship turned to the south-east and, moving away from the island, slowly moved in that direction,
"The wind!" O'Donnell shouted.
"It's blowing in our favor," said the engineer.
"God only knows..." The Irishman didn't finish his sentence. A massive detonation was heard on the ocean, drowning out the sentence. "What's going on?" he asked, turning pale.

“In nostro aiuto?” esclamò l’ingegnere.
"A steamer!" screamed Walter.
A ship had detached itself from the island and was following the airship full steam ahead.
"Are you going to help us?"
"To help us," called the engineer. "No, O'Donnell, this ship is chasing us to get us. I wasn't wrong!"
"Is an English warship?"
"Yes, I see the red jackets of the Kriegsmarine on the bridge."
"So you think...?"

"That this ship knows who we are and, more importantly, who you are."
"That's impossible sir!"
"And why?"
"There isn't just one balloon in the world and who knows how many others have risen since we took off."
"But my Washington has a special shape and we are the only ones who have dared this great crossing."

Another detonation echoed across the ocean. The engineer strained his ears but did not hear the whistle of a projectile.
It was a salvo," he said. "Do you know what that means to the people of the sea?"
"A prompt to stop?"
"Yes, and for us to come down, otherwise we will be shot at."
"Fate decreed that I should fall into their hands," O'Donnell said resignedly.
"Then they'll just take me prisoner."
"They haven't got you yet, O'Donnell."

“Che cosa volete fare, Mister Kelly?”
“Salvarvi.”
“Sfido l’equipaggio a salire fino a noi.”
"What do you want to do, Mister Kelly?"
"Save you."
"But don't you see that the balloon is sinking and the wind is pushing us at a maximum speed of 10 miles an hour? They will be here in a few minutes."
"I'll ask the crew to come up to us."
"It will happen soon."
"Not so soon."
"We have no more ballast to throw off."
"We have the barrels, the cylinders, the crates, the guns, the ammunition and finally the gondola. Ah! Gentlemen of England, you will not catch us so easily."

"But if they catch us, they'll think you're my accomplice."
"Bah! I'm American, I'm not your subordinate and they won't dare touch me."
"Thank you, Mister Kelly," O'Donnell called in a moved voice. "I owe them my life."
"Save your thanks, my good friend, and get ready to unload the gondola. To save ourselves we must reach the shores of Africa and get far enough off shore."
"Is the wind driving us to shore?"

"Not directly, but in a few hours I hope to land among the woods of the interior."
Meanwhile, the ship, which was burning tons of coal to increase speed, was approaching at great speed. It was a cruiser of between 1,000 and 1,200 gross tons, fitted out like a Goletta, rather long and narrow. At the stern, on top of the mast of the three The English flag flew on the stern sail and on the mainmast that of the Kriegsmarine. There was no mistaking their intentions after those two volleys.

No doubt the departure of the Washington had been announced to all English warships in the western ports of Europe and Africa. They now knew that the Fenian O'Donnell had fled with the bold balloonist and all must have received orders to arrest him before he reached any state.

When they saw the big ship coming from the east, the commander must have guessed that he was dealing with the Washington, the only one that could come from the direction of the Atlantic, and immediately went in pursuit, determined to destroying it with cannon shots before it can load in the forests of Senegal-Gambia, on French territory, where his men could not penetrate without causing serious diplomatic complications.

The Washington sank. She was only 1200 meters from the surface of the ocean and did not stop.
The balloonists could now clearly see the English crew stationed on the cruiser's deck, the officers standing upright on the navigation bridge and the bow gun that had fired.
"Let's hurry," said the engineer. "These men are not kidding and will open fire on us if they see that instead of descending we are trying to climb further up."

At that moment a booming voice rose from the Kreutzer's bridge.
"Come down!"
The engineer didn't bother to answer and unfurled the United States flag.
"Come down or we'll open fire!" the voice repeated.
"Didn't I tell you that these foxes know where we come from and who we are?" the engineer asked.
He leaned over the stern of the gondola, grabbed a megaphone and shouted. "What do you want?"

“Scendete o facciamo fuoco.''
“Andate all’inferno!” urlò l’ingegnere furioso.
"For you to come down," answered a booming voice.
"By what right?"
"With that of a warship."
"I am a citizen of the American Union and am not accountable to any ship of His Majesty."
"You have an English citizen on board. The convict Harry O'Donnell."
"I do not know."
"Come down or we'll open fire."
"Go to hell!" the engineer replied angrily.

Then he turned to O'Donnell, who showed amazing nerves of steel, and the boy, and yelled, "Cast off!" At this command, the Irishman and Walter threw down the gas tanks, crates, barrels, spare clothing, mattresses, blankets and everything else that was in the gondola. There was an angry roar from the ship's bridge, then fifteen or twenty gunshots were fired, but the ship was already out of range. Lightened by that weight, it had made a mighty leap, reaching 12,000 feet.

“Buon viaggio!” gridò l’ingegnere ironicamente. “Spero di farvi correre!...”
"Have a good trip!" the engineer called ironically. "I hope to make you run!..."
