However, he recalled the anxiety he had endured that night and, hanging devotedly on Gaia's arm, he proposed that a clause be inserted in the contract compelling Westermann to publish the novel, at least in German, before the nineteenth.

He was in a hurry, poor Mario, and he would have been willing to sacrifice part of the two hundred thousand crowns if that could have hastened the great success. "I'm not that young anymore," he said in an apology, "and I would like to see my novel translated before I die".

Gaia was indignant and his disdain for Mario increased as Mario's affection for him grew. One had to be pretty arrogant to discuss the proposal that had been made to him regarding this worthless novel.

As he was able to hide his laughter, he was also able, with the same effort, to interrupt any expression of contempt, and to enjoy himself even more later, he would have liked to have found a way to do that to insert the clause requested by Mario.

Yet there was no place in those pages (which were actually a contract governing the transportation of wine in boxcars), nor was there any way to work in Mario's presence, or even pretend to work, if you were in full body felt the desire to burst out laughing.

Gaia, after being filled for a moment with so much spite that he was forced to cover his face with his hand and scratch first his nose, then his forehead and finally his chin (perhaps he was only ever able to laughing with part of his face) began to contradict Mario's request.

First he argued that Westermann might be annoyed at so many demands and then, seeing that Mario was saddened by the fact that he had been denied such a simple request, which did not harm Westermann at all, and so much for him worried, then he had a brilliant idea:

"Don't you think that someone who pays two hundred thousand crowns has every reason to see that his money bears fruit?" Mario saw that was a good argument, but his craving was so great that no argument would have sufficed to satisfy it. Wait any longer? What would he do all the time? Fables could only be made on days full of surprises:

Waiting is an adventure, indeed a single misfortune, and can give only one story, which he had already told:the tale of every sparrow, for example, that starved to death hoping for bread where it happened to have been sown (an example of gluttony combined with sloth, that sometimes found in fables) :

Mario hesitated. He searched and found no other word (that is not too strong) to insist on his request. So there was a new pause in the negotiations. Gaia tasted his coffee and waited for Mario to agree, which obviously wasn't long in coming. Mario looked at the bald head of Westermann's representative, who carefully read the contract again, sticking in his long, narrow nose, his glasses trembling.

Why were these glasses shaking? Maybe because the nose went through the contract word for word to see if Mario's wish hadn't already been fulfilled. The German's bald head leaned towards him like a mute face, blind and without a nose, very serious because he lacked the organs that would have enabled him to laugh.

She was tragic, pink skin covered by some reddish hair. "Finally", Mario thought, "I'll be patient and as soon as I get the money I'll be able to announce my success". Resignedly he started to sign the contract with the fountain pen that Gaia handed him. ".
