So it can be said that Gaia's hoax assumed very ominous proportions, for from the very beginning it distorted the appearance of the world. And when Mario had to change his mind, he stuffed it into a fable along with the critic. This was the only critic he had ever liked.

Vero esempio d'odio tale favola.
A hungry sparrow found many pieces of bread one day. He believed they were due to the generosity of the largest animal he had ever seen, a heavy ox grazing in a neighboring field. Then the ox was slaughtered, the bread disappeared, and the sparrow wept for its benefactor. A real example of hate was this fable.

Making yourself a blind and stupid animal like this sparrow and being able to turn a huge beast into a critic. Such was his success that Mario made a decision that lessened the effect of the joke.

There was no need to tell anyone about the happiness he had experienced right now. If the book were published in German, there would be more astonishment in the city and across the nation if it were unexpected. For him, who had been waiting for success for so many years, it made no great difference whether he now had to go without it for a while.

The brother, already lying down, began to express doubts about the veracity of what Gaia had said, but without much emphasis, almost as automatically as one doubts when one hears surprising news. But immediately, nimbly, he repressed it to the core of his innermost being, since he could diminish his brother's joy.

He didn't know Gaia and therefore the doubt was unfounded. Beneath his sleepy head, his lively eyes took part in all the joy. All new things confused him and he didn't think it was good for his health, but Mario's joy must be his too.

However, he didn't quite see the meaning, when Mario spoke to him about their future wealth, he couldn't see its meaning.

His life could not be warmer than now, and the temptation for tastier foods, which were injurious to his health, would be greater.
