Gaia enjoyed Mario's state of mind, which was fully revealed to him. His only fault was that he considered himself particularly clever. He was no more than an ordinary character who knew the habits of his prey.

Maybe he exaggerated the cleverness. Before setting off to find this very important person, who might already be about to leave Trieste, he asked Mario for a written declaration guaranteeing him a commission of five percent.

Mario found the suggestion reasonable, but considering the fact that they would have to wait for the slow waiter to bring a pen and paper, so that Gaia didn't waste any more time, he suggested that he should leave immediately, while writing the statement and sending it to him the next day.

But Gaia didn't want to. In order for transactions to function securely, there was only one way to transact them. And the declaration was drawn up with the utmost care, in which Mario committed himself and his heirs to pay him a commission on every income he received now and in the future from the Westermann publishing house.

To this declaration, Mario attached, on his own initiative, a declaration of gratitude that was nothing but a forgery, because it was motivated by the desire to express his double anger, the first, very strong, because of the frivolity with which Gaia has his interests in had brought danger to hide the second, less strong, because of the suspicion he had shown him by demanding this explanation immediately.

After that, it was Gaia who rushed was in a hurry. He ran away and couldn't wait to laugh freely. Mario would have liked to run with him to relieve his tension, but Gaia didn't want..

First he had to go to his office for a moment, then he had to stop by a customer who might be able to give him the address of the German and finally he would have gone to a place where the chaste Mario would hardly have wanted to follow him and where one would surely find the German if he was still in town.

Before he left, he wanted to reassure Mario and show him that his mistake doesn't mean too much. Now that he thought about it, he said he remembered that Westermann's representative, albeit of German descent, was born in Istria.

So he would be an Italian citizen by birth and therefore could not be expelled. That was the only act where he showed himself to be a shrewd jester. Mario's intense anger had not escaped him and he felt that this was not the right moment to provoke it.

So when Mario left the café, he found himself at the pinnacle of certain success in the dead of night. This would not be the case if he still had to fear that the German could be forced to leave Trieste. He took a deep breath and it seemed to him that he had never breathed such air in his life.

He tried to ease the inner tension that was tormenting him and forced himself to view this adventure as something that was nothing out of the ordinary.
