The crucial difference in Spanish between ser / estar is the fact that ser describs an inherent characteristic, estar an ephemeral one. This distinction is not made in Italian and completely irrelevant concerning the use of essere and stare.

Simplyfiying we can say that a mental / physical state from the type subject + to be + adjective (I am happy / He is big) is never described with stare. Before we see the examples in the dictionary De Mauro, which affirms these theses, once again a statement found on the internet.

| Mah, veramente non sono un teorico della grammatica. Mi sembra pero' che stare non sia molto frequentemente associato con emozioni. Si usa più che altro "essere". sono contento, sono lieto, sono felice, sono estasiato, sono al settimo cielo, sono sulle spine, sono triste, sono disperato, sono innamorato, sono infatuato Vediamo un po' se trovo espressioni di emozioni con "stare"... mmm sto morendo dalla voglia, sto sprofondando nella tristezza, sto ardendo dal desiderio, sto superando me stesso vedo che sono tutte espressioni con un gerundio... STARE+gerundio pero' posso anche dire: sto sulle spine (unico caso tra i precedenti) un'eccezione mi sembra che sia: sto male, sto bene (sia fisicamente che psicologicamente) STO credo che equivalga a STAY or BE, esprime quasi sempre un posizionamento fisico (credo), se non seguito dal gerundio sto a casa, sto in barca, sto da mamma, sto dal dottore, "Si sta come d'autunno sugli alberi le foglie" [Ungaretti] "Ognuno sta solo sul cuor della terra trafitto da un raggio di sole: ed è subito sera" [Quasimodo] "Ma si sta. E si indaga e ci si interroga, come si addice a un orgoglioso giunco pensante" [chi mi sa dire di chi e????] posso pero' anche avere: sto viaggiando, sto cenando, sto conversando, sto zoppicando sto finendo, sto arrivando, sto ultimando, sto ritardando, sto presentando, sto ridendo, sto parlando, sto scrivendo quindi la costruzione col gerundio esprime quasi sempre la vostra costruzione ING I'm traveling, dining, talking, ??? | I am not at all a theoretician of languages but I think that stare is rarely used in relationship with emotions. Most of all essere is used. sono contento (I am pleased), sono lieto (I am happy), sono felice (I am lucky), sono estasiato (I am delighted), sono al settimo cielo (I am in the seventh sky), sono sulle spine (I am nervous), sono triste (I am sad), sono disperato (I am desperated), sono innamorato (I am in love), sono infatuato (I am enthousiastic) Let' s have a look to the description of emotions with stare...mmm sto morendo dalla voglia (I am crazy about it), sto sprofondando nella tristezza (I get more and more sad), sto ardendo dal desiderio (I am anxious to do it), sto superando me stesso (I surpass myself) I see that all these expressions are with gerundio... stare + gerundio But you can say as well sto sulle spine (I am nervous (I am on thornes)) (the only exception) an exception seems to be sto male (I feel bad), sto bene (I well well) - (in good psychical and physical state) Sto, has always the meaning of the English to stay or to be if not followed by a gerundio. sto a casa (I stay at home), sto in barca (I stay on the ship), sto da mamma (I live with my mother), sto dal dottore (I am at the doctor) "Si sta comme d' autunno sugli alberi le foglie" "We live like the leaves on the trees in automn" (Ungaretti) "Ognuno sta solo sul cuor della terra trafitto da un raggio di sole: ed è subito sera" (Quasimodo) "Everybody is alone on the heart of the earth penetrated by shafts of sunlight and suddenly, it is evening" (Quasimdo) Ma si sta.
