13.4.5 connecting an infinitive to a noun

There are a lot of construction of this kind.

He had the intention to go to America.
He had the desire, to say her what he thought about it.
He had enough money to live without working.
He used his computers only to play.

This kind of construction is only possible, in English and in Italian, if the subject of the main clause is the same as the subject of the infinite Verb. (In the first sentence the person who has the intention is the same person that wants to go to America.) If the finite verb has a different subject only a construction with a subordinate clause is possible.

HE has the desire, that SHE goes to the university.

Special attention is to be made to the fact, that the preposition per is to be used, if the action is intended.

Aveva abbastanza tempo per informarsi.
He has enough time to get informed.

Basically one can say that a verb is connected to a noun always with di and a is only to be used if the noun derivates from a verb which requires the preposition a.

l' inclinazione = the inclination form inclinare = to decline
L' inclinizione della gente a credere a qualsiasi promessa è pericolosa.
The inclination of the people to believe in any promise is dangerous.
lo stimolo = the incentive from stimolare = to stimulate, to breed
Per prima cosa, la persona deve identificare quale specifica situazione scatena lo stimolo a mangiare troppo.
First of all the person has to find out which specific situation stimulates the incentive to eat to much.
la disponibilità = the disponibility from disponere = to have
Si richiede inoltre la disponibilità a muoversi sul territorio nazionale.
Furthermore the disponibility is disposed to mouve inside the national borders.

Nevertheless the preposition a used to connect an infinitive to a noun is an exception, normally di is used, at least if there is no logical relationship to be expressed with the preposition.
