The most famous idiomatic expression with the subjunctive is without any doubt this one.

In this case the subjunctive expresses a wish himself and doesn't depend on any other verb. This use exists in Italian as well. The subjunctive is used in English and Italian as well in idiomatic expressions where the author, the goal or the circumstance are unknown.

Whatever be his pursuits, his eagerness in them should know no moderation.

Whoever be the music director, whoever be the lyricist, the song became popular with her finesse.
